    Don't Look Back With Anger

For a long time I am very interested in the eyes of those around me and try to discover what really hides in their depths. Because there is nothing more expressive and treacherous than eyes. By the look I hope to solve the riddle of their secrets, accumulated experiences, suppressed emotions. Sometimes it seems to me that I could forecast reactions or even guess thoughts of my acquaintances. But it doesn't always turn out my way. I seek to puzzle out signs, which time and life are leaving on their faces, the language of facial expression and gestures.

I started to take photographs of people, whom I came across in recent two years. Initially I was only interested in momentary states. Later I found out that one look, gazing straight in the lens (respectively at the audience) and separated from the distracting, often deceptive context of the face, acts as an incredibly powerful image. It suggests confidence and intimacy, willingness for self-revealing. I'm also convinced that eyes reflect permanent inner nature of human in the utmost degree. They not only mirror back the whole palette of individual joy and sorrow, personal happiness and tragedy. Eyes also are testimonial for all social collapses and collective expectations, which cause our joint pessimism or optimism. Through this great number of photos I make an attempt to catch a group-portrait of the specific time we use to live in.

These photos are multiple times enlarged to increase their effect and strength, and are arranged side by side without any space between. So I obtain an endless row of eyes, observing us from everywhere - different people’s eyes, transfusing into one another and suggesting different things. They force us to peer closely into them and in the same time pierce not less inquisitive. This "tape" (ink jet printed) encircles the whole exposition space at height above the eye-level.

Under the b/w photos I put inscriptions. They contain definitions for specific psychological states of mind. I've made the following experiment: first I've shown my work to people who don't know personally the photographed ones and asked them to say the key word which is most typical for the corresponding person. All images “act” in various ways and sometimes provoke even contrary opinions. Maybe the words, in contrast to the expression of the eyes, are not always accurate and clear enough, or just have dual meaning.

I don't look for some direct suggestions or misleading of the viewer. That is why I reversed the words mirror-like (although it is possible to read and understand the subscriptions). Besides part of the letters showed inclination for dualism, as if alive, too. Act as twins at reversed look like p and q, b and d, or remain identical even when inverted (o, v, w). The words alternate without intervals between them, just like the photos. They pass under someone's eyes into others', concerning various people. They only differ in their color, following the logic of its emotional intensity. In "Study for the colors" Goethe used to build a strict and complicated system about the relationship between colors and emotions. According to it red expresses intelligence and nobleness, yellow is symbol for understanding, blue - for harmony, violet - for fantasy. But some psychologists think red represents fury or disgust, blue suggests deadly boredom or anxiety, green brings hope.

Main goal of this project is interactive communication with the audience. As a whole, the combination between photos, words and colors evokes someone's agreement or difference of opinion. It provokes the spectator to look inside himself , reaching the depths of hidden emotions, to find answers how his own eyes will be estimated by the others. This means new kind of look at life, new experience, smartness and willingness for new type of communication, care and tolerance to other people.
